What is the vision?

We will up to 5 AI Residents yearly to come work with the DeepLabCut core development team in Geneva, Switzerland at EPFL. for ~6-8 weeks (for 2024, we will do an 6 week program in July-August). This will be a fully paid position (costs for travel, and a stipend for housing, etc will be covered).

What will you gain?

The expected outcome is empowerment, education and retention of you in the DeepLabCut community. We will work closely with you on new code, docs, ideas, and work on projects that give back to the larger community: whether that is an educational module, animal conservation efforts, or building materials for you to help your local community get involved in the behavioral analysis revolution.

While the core will have a focus will be on pose estimation, we will also cover “post-pose” behavioral analysis tools that we and others develop.

DeepLabCut’s GitHub repository has now >100 code contributors, and we want to also explicitly increase DEI in our code contributors and users - in this program we will focus on nurturing new contributors that can have a long term impact on the project.

Moreover, by building a diverse community of contributors, we expect that more users will organically be welcomed into the community: representation matters! We want other users to “see themselves” in the active user base and feel excited and comfortable contributing to the project.

They are wanted, welcomed, and we are eager to get them into the code development and maintenance side of the project. We also aim to actively foster them into leadership roles in the community: becoming a CZI-DeepLabCut AI Resident should be an opportunity for them within DeepLabCut, and in their local community (to run workshops, etc), but also in the broader open source community --- they should leave with the know-how to contribute to other projects too. Here, we want to empower them with the tools and confidence to be active leaders in open source science.
